Careers in Computer Science
Computer Science professionals in all areas are in high demand. In terms of job demands and availability, computing is second only to healthcare in projected job growth through the year 2014. Students who begin at PRCC, transfer and then graduate with university degrees in a computer science related field realize rewarding careers in private and public sector positions with starting salaries averaging over $42K per year according to a 2006 survey.* Actual starting salaries vary depending on the area of the country and the nature of the work. Money magazine [Money/CNN 2006] listed Software Engineering as Number 1 and Computer Information Technology Analyst as Number 7 among the "Best Jobs in America," based on stress levels, flexibility in hours, working environment, creativity, and ease to enter and advance in the field, in addition to job prospects.
Mississippi's eight public universities offer Bachelor degrees in one or more of these computer science related fields: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Information Systems. Other variations, which combine with business degrees, are Business Information Systems and Management Information Systems. In all of these cases, the computer science faculty and course offerings available at PRCC are provided to support the first two years of college leading to a four-year degree.
